After leaving the G7 summit

US President Trump has left the G7 summit early – leaving the rest of the world puzzled. Does the US now intend to intervene in the war? Or are diplomatic negotiations just beginning?

After his early departure from the G7 summit, Donald Trump is back in Washington. What will he do? This question looms large at the moment. Republican Senator and close Trump confidant Lindsay Graham said on Fox News that there are two ways to prevent Iran from acquiring a nuclear weapon: diplomacy or force."I think we're heading down the path toward force," Graham said.

A decision on this could soon be made in the White House Situation Room. On the way back from the G7 summit, Trump said of Iran on Air Force One:"They should have made a deal. I told them to make a deal." Donald Trump added that he wasn't in much of a mood to negotiate right now. The US president also made it clear that he wanted a"real end" to the nuclear program, not a ceasefire—an end.

Trump wants to continue the deal with Iran

Earlier, Trump had called for an immediate evacuation of people in the Iranian capital Tehran on his Truth Social platform. Asked whether the president still pursued a deal with Iran, US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth replied on Fox News:"Of course, his position hasn't changed."

Hegseth explained that what we are witnessing right now is peace through strength and America First. The US is positioned defensively in the region to be strong and pursue a peace agreement, Hegseth said."And we certainly hope that happens here."

Former Republican Representative Charlie Dent explained on CNN that the issue is whether the US wants to continue pursuing its America-First isolationist course. Israel's attack on Iran is forcing the US to make a decision.

US media: Second aircraft carrier deployed to the Middle East

Many are concerned that the US could actually intervene directly in the conflict, for example by targeting Iran's underground nuclear facilities with heavy bunker-busting bombs. Unlike the US, Israel does not possess these bunker-busting bombs. Democratic Representative Gregory Meeks, for example, demanded on CNN:"We have to get our civilians out of the region."

US media reports that the US military is sending a second aircraft carrier to the Middle East. The US also reportedly deployed dozens of tanker aircraft to Europe last weekend so they can be quickly deployed to the Middle East if needed.

It's impossible to predict how US President Trump will decide. The possibility of seeking a diplomatic solution remains. And even though Trump says he's not in the mood for negotiations at the moment, he hasn't ruled out sending his special envoy Steve Witkoff and/or Vice President J.D. Vance to meet with Iranian negotiators—if Iran would even negotiate.
