The World's Current Take

The PSOE has responded to the request of the Supreme Court, which had detected apparent differences in the amounts contributed to the party by the former Secretary of Organization José Luis Ábalos, pointing out that there are two different ways of income, one carried out directly by the deputy and another through the Parliamentary Group.

This Thursday, the Supreme Court had asked the Congress of Deputies and the PSOE to inform it of the contributions and donations made by Ábalos, given the"apparent lack of consistency" between the data collected by the Treasury and the data recorded in the former minister's bank accounts.

The PSOE responds by explaining the voluntary contributions and membership fee process used by senior PSOE officials, deputies, and senators.

Parliamentarians, such as Ábalos - who still holds his position as a deputy of the Mixed Group - receive their salaries from the Parliamentary Group, not from the Congress of Deputies."The voluntary contribution is deducted from that salary," they indicate.

On the other hand, each deputy pays a fee to the PSOE, as do all its members. This payment is made by each person individually, which would explain the lack of harmony detected by the Civil Guard in Ábalos's tax data and accounts.

The UCO told the Supreme Court that, based on information from the Treasury, Ábalos made donations to the PSOE totaling"44,729.29" euros between 2014 and 2024, and indicated that the former minister's bank accounts only record donations to the party totaling"8,471.36 euros."

The PSOE maintains that these contributions are "perfectly declared" to the Public Treasury and are also audited by the Court of Auditors under the Political Party Financing Law. Ferraz also states that it will forward all required information to the Supreme Court and will cooperate with the courts.
