Peace Process and Broader Diplomatic Context

Trump-Putin Direct Communications

“Viktor, you are fantastic,” US President Donald Trump praised the Hungarian Prime Minister the other day, who saluted him with a half-hearted smile.

At the Egyptian peace summit, Trump, who did not win the Nobel Prize but has made huge peace deals, singled out Orbán from a number of other politicians in his speech to assure him of his support. Although it may have seemed strange at the time that the Hungarian elections would be discussed at a peace conference convened to resolve the Middle East conflict, it later slowly became understandable, after which Trump praised Orbán in advance. The video of the incident naturally filled government-related platforms, becoming one of the most emphatic messages for days.

And then this morning the Hungarian Prime Minister is already modest about the fact that the news has"got out" that Budapest could host the Trump-Putin meeting. The news was dropped by none other than Trump, to which Orbán, among other things, commented: Budapest is the only place in Europe where such a meeting could be held.

Of course, the question may arise: why here, why now, and who will benefit from this? And especially: what will be the end of all this? In our article this morning we wrote about the latter question: it would be like guessing at a bird's-eye view if we wanted to guess.

It is worth noting, however, that Budapest could be a location of particular importance for both Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin. Mainly because both the American and Russian presidents are at odds with the European Union, with the former criticizing EU member states and the Union itself mainly on economic grounds, while the latter has long been interested in fomenting discord in the European community and thus destroying unified action against Russia (in which, by the way, Hungary, i.e. Viktor Orbán, has been a good partner).

The fact that the two of them will be able to shake hands in the middle of an EU member state - even if it's a separate trip - and the Hungarian Prime Minister will be there to support them is a huge achievement in itself (or if you prefer: a raised middle finger).
