The US president hosted Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Monday. After the talks, the two spoke to the press for about half an hour at the White House.
Netanyahu thanked Trump for his efforts for peace in the world and highlighted his work for peace in the Middle East.
– He is creating peace as we speak, in several countries and regions, said Netanyahu, who revealed that he has nominated Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize.
Netanyahu then handed the US president a letter he has sent to the Nobel Committee.
– Thank you very much, I didn't show this in advance. The fact that it comes from you means a lot, Trump said when he received the letter from Netanyahu.
Excludes a two-state solution
In the talks between Trump and Netanyahu, a possible ceasefire in Gaza was discussed, among other things. Trump says Hamas wants to meet and wants a ceasefire, but Netanyahu was more cautious about peace with the Palestinians.
He ruled out a two-state solution and said that Israel will always retain security control over Gaza.
"People are going to say it's not a complete state, it's not a state. We don't care," Netanyahu said when asked about the prospects for a future two-state solution.
The meeting between Netanyahu and Trump took place at the same time as Israel and Hamas are holding indirect negotiations on a ceasefire in Gaza in Qatar.
Hope to avoid new attacks on Iran
Trump also told the press that new talks with Iran are planned.
– They want to talk, said Trump.
According to Reuters, Trump's special envoy Steve Witkoff says that the talks could take place as early as next week - or somewhat later.
The United States attacked three Iranian nuclear facilities on the night of Sunday, June 22. A few days later, a ceasefire was negotiated between Israel and Iran, which had been at war since June 13.
When asked what it would take for the United States to attack Iran again, Trump replied:
– I hope we don't have to do that. I can't imagine they want us to do that again. They want to meet and come to a solution. They are different now than they were two weeks ago.
– How can we trust the United States again?
Plans for new nuclear talks have not been confirmed by Iran, but Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian said on Monday that Iran has no problem resuming nuclear talks with the United States, provided there is trust between the countries.
"There is a condition for resuming talks. How are we going to be able to trust the United States again? If we resume talks, how do we know that the Israeli regime will not be given permission again to attack us," Pezeshkian said in an interview with American TV personality Tucker Carlson.
Allegations that Iran is developing nuclear weapons have been used as justification for both Israeli and American attacks on Iran. Iran has consistently denied that it is seeking to build nuclear weapons and says its nuclear program is for civilian purposes only.
More weapons for Ukraine
In addition, Trump said that the United States will send more weapons to Ukraine.
– We have to. They have to be able to defend themselves, they are hard hit, said the president, adding that the United States will mainly send defensive weapons.
The statements come after the US Department of Defense said last week that it was withholding arms deliveries to Ukraine over concerns that its own stockpile was low.
