The United States is holding state and local elections this Tuesday in six states — New York, New Jersey, Virginia, California, Pennsylvania and Texas — in a day that tests the political climate during Donald Trump's second term and sets the tone for the upcoming legislative elections.

The voting, which began at 6:00 a.m. (local time), revolves around debates on housing, the economy, and the future of traditional parties, although national attention is focused on the New York City Mayor's race after Trump warned that he would withdraw federal funds if the socialist Democrat Zohran Mamdani wins.

In New York, 34-year-old Mamdani is leading the mayoral race, according to AtlasIntel, facing off against former Governor Andrew Cuomo and Republican Curtis Sliwa with proposals such as affordable housing and higher taxes on the wealthy. Mamdani has the backing of Bernie Sanders, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, and other Democratic figures, while Cuomo criticized his rival's lack of experience and his stance on Israel in a city with a large Jewish community.

In New Jersey, the election to determine the successor to Governor Phil Murphy pits Republican Jack Ciattarelli, backed by Trump, against Democrat Mikey Sherrill. The campaign is marked by proposals to freeze utility rates, tax cuts, and the debate over the cost of energy, which, according to the Energy Information Administration, has risen 21% in the last year.

The remaining elections include the Virginia gubernatorial race, where school policies and transgender rights are central issues; Proposition 50 in California regarding the redistricting system; the continuation of Democratic justices on the Pennsylvania Supreme Court; and the renewal of Texas's 18th Congressional District.
