Budapest Pride Ban and Political Implications

International Political Reactions

Swedish activist Greta Thunberg posted on her Instagram page on Saturday afternoon at the Budapest Pride rally point, City Hall Park. In her video, she briefly talked about how the event is not only a demonstration for the rights of the LGBTQ+ community, but also that they want to show that love is for everyone.

Today I join thousands of people on the streets of Budapest defying Viktor Orbán's desperate attempt to ban the Pride parade

– said Greta Thunberg.

He emphasized that Pride is both a protest and a celebration of love and “who we are.” “This is another fascist attack on human rights,” he said, adding that love cannot be banned.

Greta Thunberg last visited Budapest in December last year and visited the Bolygó community space, where she spent an hour drinking tea and talking with members of the organization about, among other things, the Hungarian and Swedish movements, burnout, and activist tactics.

Deported from Israel

As we wrote, in early June, Israel deported climate activist Greta Thunberg and several of her companions who were trying to deliver aid to Gaza on the ship Madleen. The ship departed from Catania, Sicily, on June 1st, with the aim of delivering the aid and breaking the Israeli blockade.

Thunberg was joined by Rima Hassan, a French member of the European Parliament of Palestinian origin, who was also on the ship, which is operated by the Freedom Flotilla Coalition. The politician is barred from entry due to her opposition to Israel's policies towards the Palestinians.
