Critical of Government Response

Fires are keeping 40 fires active in Spain, 23 of them"particularly worrying," according to the government. Ourense, León, Zamora and Cáceres continue to bear the brunt of the fires, which as of August 10 had burned 138,000 hectares, although the number of hectares consumed in the last week by the devastating wave of fires has not been counted.

According to the European Commission's Forest Fire Information System (EFFIS) of Copernicus, the figure could rise to around 300,000 hectares consumed by fire in August alone.

The wave of fires has also left, for now, four fatalities : a 57-year-old firefighter in a fire engine accident while extinguishing a fire in Espinoso de Compludo (León) , as well as two volunteers also in León and another man in Tres Cantos (Madrid) .

Faced with this situation, Spain is going to receive"the largest contingent of international aid in history", according to government sources, through the European Civil Protection Mechanism: this Tuesday a BlackHawk helicopter with a capacity of 3,400 liters arrived from Slovakia to Pinofranqueado (Cáceres) to operate in Jarilla (Cáceres); and another RescEU aircraft will land at the Matacán base (Salamanca) from the Czech Republic to operate between Castile and León and Galicia.

Avoiding outdoor physical exertion is advised due to particles from the fires.

The Department of the Environment of the Junta de Castilla y León, given the high concentration of particles due to the forest fires in Valladolid, recommends that the entire population avoid outdoor activities that require physical effort, and asks people in risk groups and those sensitive to air quality to take special protection measures and follow their medication plans.

The Air Quality Control Network of Castilla y León records very high levels of particles throughout the west of the Community and in the province of Valladolid, a direct consequence of the emissions caused by the forest fires in Castilla y León , Galicia and Portugal.

Therefore, the Board recommends taking precautionary measures in the face of very high concentrations of particles, and advises avoiding activities that involve physical effort, especially for people included in risk groups and those sensitive to air quality.

For people with cardiorespiratory conditions or severe allergies, the Board advises avoiding prolonged, vigorous outdoor activities. People with asthma or respiratory conditions should carefully follow their medication plan.

Also, remember that people with heart problems may experience palpitations, difficulty breathing, or unusual fatigue. Given this situation, these especially vulnerable groups are recommended to wear masks or stay home for the duration of this situation.

The bear's habitat will need fifteen years to recover from the ravages of the fire.

The habitat of endangered species, such as the brown bear or the capercaillie, need"between seven and fifteen years" to recover from fires such as those that have caused havoc in the southwestern municipalities of Asturias, which are home to the largest reserve of plantigrade animals in the country.

Asturian wildlife experts, such as biologist Carlos Nores, have confirmed that the brown bear has a certain ability to escape in these types of situations, so the devastation to its population is related to the medium-term loss of the ecosystem in which they find the resources they need to survive.

This was also explained by the founding member of the Fund for the Protection of Wild Animals (FAPAS), Roberto Hartasánchez, who indicated that it will take"many years" until fruit-producing species, such as holm oaks, cherry trees and oaks, once again become a"food refuge" in the affected areas, according to Efe.

Navy personnel strengthen fire surveillance in Ávila and Salamanca.

Since Monday, Navy soldiers have been reinforcing the deterrent surveillance service against forest fires in the province of Ávila and in Salamanca , two provinces that no longer have forest fires at the maximum severity level, but which have suffered fires that have destroyed at least 17,500 hectares (10,500 in Salamanca and another 7,000 in Ávila).

The battalion will consist of two vehicles and ten members who will be"complemented and replaced every 12 hours," with the aim of "maintaining a permanent 24-hour patrol and surveillance service," according to the government's deputy delegate in Ávila, Fernando Galeano, in statements sent to the media. Aerial resources are working to contain the fire threatening the Picos de Europa in León.

Aerial resources are working to stop the fire in Barniedo de la Reina, whose northern flank threatens the León side of the Picos de Europa, although the flames have not advanced towards the Valdeón valley, which had to be evacuated this Sunday, and it is the southern flank in the Tierra de la Reina that is showing the worst progress.

The regional delegate for the regional government in León, Eduardo Diego, explained that in the area of La Reina, firebreaks have been in place in recent hours to defend the towns, which are the priority, and that work will continue primarily with aerial means because these are areas that are difficult to access with patrols and ground brigades. Efe reports.

As for the northern flank,"it has not advanced towards Valdeón, the Panderrueda pass has not had to be closed," he indicated, although yesterday the order was given to evacuate nine towns - where residents who have refused to leave remain - and there is concern about the evolution of the flames in this threat to the Picos de Europa National Park.

Diego, who has highlighted the positive side of the Molezuelas de la Carballeda-Castrocalbón fire's reduction to level 1,"good news" that does not mean that we can relax because we must continue working to prevent regrowth and consolidate its control, has recalled that the evolution of the Yeres-Llamas de la Cabrera fire and its impact on the Camino de Santiago territory are also a cause for concern. Efe reports.

And he hopes that the firebreaks and aerial resources can allow progress to be made in controlling this fire, which has claimed the life of a forest firefighter, who died last night when the fire engine he was driving overturned in Compludo, in an accident in which his colleague was also injured.

Record amount of burned area: flames have already ravaged nearly 350,000 hectares, with half the number of fires compared to 2022.

Fires have devastated a total of 344,417 hectares in Spain so far in 2025, the equivalent of the entire island of Mallorca, in a total of 224 fires, according to data collected by the European Forest Fire Information System (EFFIS) updated this Monday. Castilla y León reached 26 active fires early this Monday morning, August 18, of which ten are at Potential Severity Index (PSI) 2 in the provinces of Zamora, León and Salamanca, while ten reach level 1 in León, Palencia, Salamanca, Ávila and Zamora , reports Efe.

This is reflected in the forest fire report in Castile and León prepared by the regional government on the Inforcyl platform, consulted at 9:30 a.m., which shows that the situation remains"extremely serious and simultaneous" due to the number of active fires, as indicated by the Ministry of the Environment on its profile on the social network 'X'.

The most serious fires are concentrated in the provinces of Zamora, León and Salamanca, with several severity 2 fires located in these provinces, especially in León, where the fires originated in Fasgar, Anllares del Sil, Llamas de Cabrera, Yeres --which affected Las Médulas--, Paradiña, Barniedo de la Reina and Canalejas remain at this danger level, as does Gestoso.

The Barniedo and Canalejas districts are now autonomous, having moved to the province of Palencia, and the Gestoso district is the one that moved to the province of León from Ourense.

Another affected province is Zamora, where the Porto and Castromil fires—the one that crossed from Ourense—remain at severity level 2. However, the situation has improved in recent days in this area, with the Puercas fires downgraded to severity level 1, and on Saturday, the Molezuelas de la Carballeda fire, a fire that also affected León and whose devastated area reached more than 30,000 hectares last Thursday.

To these fires that are in severity 2, one was added on Sunday afternoon in the province of Salamanca, San Cristóbal de los Mochuelos, in the municipality of Cipérez, which has devastated some 10,500 hectares, according to the Board, and would be the largest in the history of Salamanca, a fire that on Monday morning had already dropped to level 1.

On the other hand, there are ten forest fires in IGR 1, those originating in Orallo (León), Resoba (Palencia), Molezuelas (Zamora), Puercas (Zamora), Castrocalbón and La Uña (León), San Cristóbal de los Mochuelos, Caín de Valdeon (León), El Herradón de Pinares (Ávila), in addition to the one in Mahíde (Zamora).

In Castilla y León, six other less serious forest fires remain active, as IGR 1 has not been declared in the provinces of León, Salamanca, and Palencia.

The Sanabria Lake road is closed due to the Porto fire (Zamora).

The forest fire in Porto (Zamora) has forced the closure of the access road to Sanabria Lake, the ZA-104, from the interpretation center at the park house in Rabanillo to the lake itself, according to the Territorial Delegation of the Regional Government of Castile and León.

The Integrated Operational Coordination Center (Cecopi) made this decision Monday morning in response to the spread of the flames, and is therefore advising the public not to visit any of the towns accessible via this route, including Galende, Ribadelago, Vigo de Sanabria, and San Martín de Castañeda.

The Regional Government's Territorial Delegation has appealed for public cooperation in order to"not endanger their lives or those of the firefighting operation," Efe reports.

Aerial resources have been gradually deployed this Monday to address the fire, which is spreading across several fronts, reaching the Tera Valley area and the neighboring provinces of León and Ourense.

This fire, which was started by lightning, is the most worrying in the province of Zamora. It has caused the population of Porto to be evacuated since last Thursday and has also forced the closure of the ZA-103 access road to the Laguna de los Peces in the natural park of Lago de Sanabria, Sierras de Segundera and de Porto.

Robles does not rule out sending more troops to the fires, but only for logistical support.

Defense Minister Margarita Robles has not ruled out increasing the number of additional troops to the 500 who will be deployed to the areas affected by the forest fires, although she has emphasized that they cannot directly attack the fire but rather carry out logistical support tasks, Efe reports.

The minister responded on Cadena SER to the president of the People's Party (PP), Alberto Núñez Feijóo, who had asked for the army to be deployed to help extinguish the fires, criticizing his"ignorance" for making that request.

"We can increase the number of (military) personnel as desired in terms of physical presence, but we cannot deceive the public. We cannot say that there is a lack of resources to extinguish the fire; they are there and have been since August 2," the minister emphasized, urging everyone not to be demagogic on this issue and, above all,"not to be disingenuous."

Robles has insisted that the direct attack on the fire can only be carried out by qualified professionals who, in the case of the Armed Forces, are the soldiers of the Military Emergency Unit (UME), who have been acting from day one"at enormous risk" to their lives.

"The essential thing is to directly attack the fire. Anything other than directly attacking the fire will be useless," the minister stressed, noting that, without entering into debate with anyone,"it's not about asking for resources but rather about having qualified professionals with the necessary and indispensable resources." 9:15

Aerial resources are being used to respond to the 19 major fires ravaging Castile and León.

Since 8:00 a.m. this Monday, aerial resources have been gradually deployed to extinguish the 19 major fires ravaging Castile and León. Ten of these fires are Level 2, located in the provinces of Zamora and León, and nine are Level 1.

The natural disaster has forced the evacuation of eight villages in the Valdeón Valley (León), the heart of the León side of the Picos de Europa National Park, where the fire has already crossed the regional border with Cantabria and has been affecting Asturias since last Saturday.

In the south, Castile and León is also watching with concern the fire that broke out a few days ago in Jarilla (Cáceres), the spread of which has been favoured by the wind and high temperatures and is already threatening the autonomous border near the Salamanca municipality of Béjar.

Thousands of people remain evacuated in municipalities of León, Palencia, Zamora and Salamanca, especially in the León region of El Bierzo, as a result of the reactivation of the Yeres/Llamas de la Cabrera fire, which caused another natural and heritage disaster last week when Las Médulas, a World Heritage Site, burned and which now covers a perimeter of 120 kilometres - 20 of which are out of control.

Temperatures are expected to ease in the area this Monday, with highs dropping to 33 degrees.

Some residents of Cansoles, relocated to the Guardo municipal pavilion, will not be able to return to their homes after the fire from León entered the municipality, according to Jose Antonio Rubio, president of Cecopi and regional delegate for the regional government in Palencia.

Despite the operational efforts, the spread of the flames has not been halted. Yesterday afternoon, the preventive evacuation of 564 people from the Palencia towns of Villalba de Guardo, Fresno del Río, and Mantinos was forced, as well as the confinement of the more than 5,500 residents of Guardo.
