Critical of US/Israeli Action

Iranian Perspective

“We have completely destroyed Iran’s nuclear facilities,” announced US President Donald Trump, and he wouldn’t be the one if he didn’t talk about “spectacular military success.” It is true that the unprecedented attack marked another milestone in Israel’s 10-day air war against Iran. American B-2 stealth bombers dropped half a dozen bunker-busting bombs on the Fordow nuclear facility, located 100 kilometers south of Tehran, which consists of two larger and several smaller tunnel systems about 100 meters deep in the bowels of the mountain. Fordow is the place where the most sensitive and controversial part of Iran’s nuclear program, the enrichment of 60 percent uranium, was presumably carried out. At the same time, American submarines fired about thirty Tomahawk missiles at the Isfahan and Natanz nuclear facilities, which had already been attacked by Israel.

Trump, who was initially not very enthusiastic about the Israeli air war against Iran, managed to get the US to intervene in just a short week. Israel does not have the GBU-57 bunker buster, the largest non-nuclear bomb and which was developed against the most hidden targets. The weapon, which is only owned by the US, was deployed for the first time, and according to experts, it has a destructive effect up to a depth of 60 meters. It is not yet known how much damage the 5-6 bunker busters dropped according to Trump's announcement caused at Fordó, and no increase in radiation has been detected yet.

The US president apparently wanted to surprise the Iranian leadership, ordering the attack hours after he announced that he was waiting for an “unconditional” Iranian capitulation within two weeks, which would mean giving up its nuclear program and uranium enrichment. But just as it was easy for Trump to drag the US into the war, it may prove just as difficult to defuse the conflict. There is no doubt that Trump has embarked on a large-scale and very risky foreign policy game, and it is doubtful that he was prepared or had an appropriate strategy in place. According to some opinions, he walked straight into the trap of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
