Donald Trump will meet with Volodymyr Zelensky at the White House on Monday to discuss the possibilities of making peace. Ursula von der Leyen, the president of the European Commission, announced at noon on Sunday that she and “other European leaders” will accompany him at the request of the Ukrainian president.

Minutes later, it was revealed that German Chancellor Friedrich Merz would also travel to Washington with them. Merz's office issued a statement saying that

“Chancellor Merz will discuss the state of the peace process, emphasizing that Germany is interested in a quick peace agreement. The talks will focus on security guarantees, territorial issues and further support for Ukraine’s defense against Russian aggression. This includes maintaining sanctions pressure.”

The next to announce was Finnish President Alexander Stubb. After that, French President Emmanuel Macron issued a statement stating that he was also with the team. He was followed by NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte and Italian Prime Minister Georgia Meloni. The spectacular failure of Viktor Orbán's foreign policy is that Meloni, who shares similar principles to him in many respects, is not a Putin friend, and therefore not only has he not isolated himself like Orbán, but he has also gained increasing influence within the EU.

When Zelensky last met with Trump at the White House, the president and his vice president, J. D. Vance, treated him aggressively and humiliatingly. The group visit may be able to prevent a repeat of the embarrassing scenes. By acting together, European leaders are trying to make Donald Trump feel that Europe cannot be left out of the peace process.

Our article may be updated, as it is not ruled out that additional heads of government and state will make announcements in the coming minutes and hours.
