US President Donald Trump signed a decree imposing an additional duty of 25% on India. In the relevant statement The White House noted that the additional duties are related to the purchase of Russian oil.

US tariffs against India for oil imports from Russia will apply to goods arriving 21 days after the decree is signed, the document states.

They said the administration could extend similar tariffs to other countries caught importing Russian oil.

The White House noted that this concerns purchases of Russian oil through intermediaries or third countries, where the origin of the oil can be reasonably traced to Russia.

When defining"oil from Russia," the US includes crude oil as well as petroleum products that may be produced by "other entities," according to Trump's executive order.

Trump's tariffs against India

Trump has been threatening India with tariffs for days if it continues to buy oil from Russia. He said that India not only buys a lot of oil from Russia,"but also sells most of it on the open market, making a huge profit".

The Indian Foreign Ministry emphasized that the country began purchasing Russian energy resources because, after the start of the full-scale Russian-Ukrainian war, traditional suppliers redirected their oil to Europe.

However, analysts interviewed by CNN noted that these so-called secondary sanctions could also hit the US economy itself - through higher prices for consumer goods, lower profitability for American companies, and possibly higher oil prices.
