Criticism of Álvaro Uribe's Speech

Political Reactions and Controversies

President Gustavo Petro began his speech to the police with a minute of silence in memory of Miguel Uribe Turbay. However, as has happened in the past, the president referred to him as Mario Uribe.

"Before we begin—I don't know if the band can accompany me—I would like a minute of silence and a moment of peace for Senator Mario Uribe Turbay," he said. He immediately corrected himself: Miguel Uribe Turbay.

"Colombia has been killing each other for decades out of revenge, political sectarianism, or hatred," the president said. | Photo: ColprensaPresidente Gustavo Petro, en la ceremonia de ascenso al grado de brigadier general de los coroneles Sandra Liliana Rodríguez Castro y Andrés Fernando Serna Bustamante, de la Policía Nacional.

The president referred to the judicial investigation currently underway to find the perpetrators of the murder and stated that the Attorney General's Office has asked for help from foreign agencies to determine "the real causes, the truth."

"Colombia has been killing each other for decades out of revenge, political sectarianism, or hatred. The word hate has ceased to be a word and has become an action many years ago," he added.

"And it's likely, though I can't confirm this, that he's the perpetrator of the murder of Senator Miguel Uribe Turbay for money. It will be the increasingly difficult investigation that will reveal the truth," Petro said.
