Iranian media reported explosions in the northeastern city of Mashhad, while the Israeli military said it had hit a plane that was refueling at the airport, AFP and Reuters reported.
The Fars news agency said explosions occurred at two locations in Mashhad, with air defenses activated in the area. The Tasnim news agency said explosions were heard near the local airport, but there was no damage to the building or runway.
Israeli attacks on the airport
The Israeli military said its air force carried out an attack on Mashhad airport, hitting a tanker plane there, adding that it was the longest strike since the start of operations against Iran on Friday.
Mashhad is the second largest city in Iran and is home to the Imam Reza Shrine, the holiest site in Shia Islam in the country.
Intense attacks and casualties
Israel launched strikes on Iran on Friday night, targeting military officials and nuclear facilities. Local media reported that at least 128 people had been killed so far. Tehran's retaliatory strikes killed at least 13 people in Israel and destroyed several residential buildings.
Israeli official Heden told Reuters that Israel had a long list of targets in Iran, but declined to say how long the offensive would continue.
According to him, the targets attacked on Saturday evening included two facilities for the production of"dual-use" fuels, which could also be used for military and nuclear operations.
Detention of suspects
Israeli authorities announced on Sunday that they had detained two of their citizens suspected of collaborating with Iranian intelligence services. The police and the Shin Bet counterintelligence agency announced this in a joint statement, TASR writes, based on reports from the AFP agency and The Times of Israel.
“In the midst of the war with Iran... officers detained two Jewish Israeli citizens on suspicion of carrying out missions for the Iranians in recent days,” the statement said. The incident is reportedly one of 22 cases of thwarted Iranian efforts recorded since the outbreak of the war in the Gaza Strip in October 2023.
Their identities were not disclosed by authorities."At a time when a large-scale campaign against Iran is underway, accompanied by shelling of populated areas and strategic locations in Israel, we are witnessing the damage and danger posed by cooperation with the Iranian enemy. He is exploiting the information these Israelis provided him with to harm Israel," the Shin Bet added in a statement.
Iranian police have detained two suspects in connection with alleged links to Israel's Mossad intelligence agency, local media reported on Sunday. The individuals were suspected of making bombs, explosives, booby traps and electronic devices, according to a police spokesman.
