The US's intervention in the war between Israel and Iran marks a dark day in world history and American politics, says Middle East expert Hilde Henriksen Waage.

Det amerikanske angrepet mot Iran markerer en mørk dag i verdenshistorien, mener forsker Hilde Henriksen Waage.

– Even though Israel's (Benjamin) Netanyahu today thinks he has received the world's best help from the United States, Netanyahu and Trump risk setting the whole world on fire, she tells NRK.

Waage, a history professor and researcher with a special focus on the Middle East, believes that last night's attack has destroyed the chances of a diplomatic solution.

– It is not possible to bomb someone into negotiations. It is not possible to bomb someone into peace.

Associate Professor at the Norwegian Air Force Academy, Lars Peder Haga, tells TV 2 that he expects there may be follow-up attacks from the US if last night's attack was not enough to put Iran's nuclear program out of action.

– Once you let the cat out of the bag, it would be stupid not to finish, he says.

Regarding a possible Iranian response, he believes they have two options.

– One is to continue using the ballistic missiles that they already use against Israel. But if they are going to hit back against the United States, then part of it is about using the proxy forces that they still have some left in Iraq and other places where there are American soldiers and start attacking camps and things like that.

In addition, they can cause significant damage to world trade, including by attacking ships in the Red Sea and the Strait of Hormuz, where there is a lot of trade and oil traffic that is important to the world economy.
