At least 60 people are killed in an operation against Comando Vermelho in Rio

Tuesday, October 28

247 - At least 60 people were killed this Tuesday (28) during a police operation that was declared to target organized crime in two community complexes in the northern zone of Rio de Janeiro, the state government reported, quoted by Reuters.

According to authorities in Rio de Janeiro, among the dead are more than a dozen suspected drug traffickers and two security agents who were shot in clashes in the Alemão and Penha favela complexes.

The Rio government considers the action to be the largest in history against the Comando Vermelho, a criminal faction operating in the region.

Since the early hours of the morning, agents have been attempting to execute 100 arrest warrants and 150 search and seizure warrants. At least 56 people have been arrested, including suspects from other states who were allegedly hiding in the capital of Rio de Janeiro.

During the operation, at least 32 rifles were seized. Governor Cláudio Castro stated that the state is confronting"narcoterrorists" using technology, armored vehicles, aircraft, drones, and the full mobilization of security forces.

“All battalions are on alert for possible retaliation,” he said.
