The World's Current Take

In Thailand, the Constitutional Court has dismissed Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra. The reason is a leaked phone call with a prominent Cambodian politician, in which Shinawatra"damaged the country's reputation." She is the fifth prime minister in 17 years to be ousted by the court, and the third in her family.

The focus is on the recently flared tensions between Thailand and neighboring Cambodia over the border. On June 15, Prime Minister Shinawatra spoke about this by phone with Hun Sen, the former Cambodian strongman and currently Senate Speaker.

In that conversation, the prime minister appears to be"bowing down" to Hun Sen, until recently a close ally of the Shinawatra family. The prime minister calls him"uncle" and criticizes a Thai border guard commander. Hun Sen himself leaked the conversation online, immediately sparking a political crisis in his neighboring country.

At that time, Thailand and Cambodia were on the brink of an armed border conflict. A month later, fighting did indeed break out, lasting five days and leaving dozens dead.

The Constitutional Court has now ruled that Prime Minister Shinawatra violated constitutional ethics rules, demonstrated a lack of"demonstrable honesty and integrity," and placed personal interests and relationships above the public interest.

According to the court, because of that personal relationship, the prime minister was willing to do what Cambodia asked, and thus damaged the reputation of her country.

Prime Minister Shinawatra apologized after the leak, saying her behavior during the meeting was a negotiating tactic to avoid conflict."All I wanted was to save lives, whether soldiers or civilians. I was determined to do everything I could to protect their lives."

Shinawatra had only been in power for a year and, at 39, was Thailand's youngest prime minister ever. She came to power after her predecessor was ousted.

Paetongtarn Shinawatra is the daughter of influential businessman and former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, who was ousted by the military in a 2006 coup.

Paetongtarn Shinawatra is the fifth Thai prime minister in 17 years to be overruled by the Constitutional Court. It's also a family trait, as she's the third prime minister in her family to suffer the same fate.

Deputy Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai will now temporarily take over her position until a new Prime Minister is appointed by Parliament.
