US-EU Relations and Tensions

In short

  • The British Prime Minister and the leaders of Germany and France stressed their unity and support for Ukraine during peace talks in London.
  • The British Prime Minister stressed that the talks are at a critical stage.
  • The discussions focused on the conditions for a fair ceasefire and Ukraine's security against another Russian attack.
  • The leaders expressed skepticism about the US-Russian proposals and raised the issue of frozen Russian assets.

In response to the British Prime Minister's words, Zelensky thanked him for organizing the meeting in London and stated that it was an important moment to discuss all sensitive issues related to ending the war with Russia, which has been going on for almost four years.

Peace Plan and Talks in London:"We All Support Ukraine"

- The thing that is very important today (...) is the unity of Europe, Ukraine and the USA - said the Ukrainian leader, adding that there are issues"that we cannot cope with without the Americans (...) and that we cannot cope with without Europe."

Allied leaders assured Zelensky that they were ready to develop concrete plans in the event of the imminent signing of peace agreements. Starmer, Merz, Macron, and Zelensky also added that they would work closely with the American side to provide Ukraine with security guarantees against a renewed Russian attack.

In the opinion of the German Chancellor, the coming days"may be decisive (...) for all of us" regarding Ukraine. Merz assured that both Germany, Great Britain, and France"continue to strongly support Ukraine."

- The fate of this country is the fate of Europe - he added.

Merz was skeptical about"some details contained in the American side's peace plan documents."

The plan, developed by American and Russian diplomats, included reducing the size of the Ukrainian army, returning some occupied territories to Russia, and guaranteeing that Ukraine would not apply for NATO membership after the end of the war.

A British government source told Reuters that the leaders also discussed the use of frozen Russian assets.
