US Vice President J.D. Vance said on Sunday that a ceasefire agreement for the war in Ukraine that is being prepared is unlikely to be to the liking of both sides in the conflict.
"Nobody's going to be super happy. Both the Russians and the Ukrainians will probably end up unhappy [with the deal]," the American politician said in an interview broadcast this Sunday on Fox News, but recorded last Friday.
The vice president's statement comes just days after it was confirmed that US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin will meet in Alaska on Friday, August 15, to discuss a ceasefire in Ukraine.
Earlier this Sunday, it was also revealed that the White House is considering inviting Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to this meeting.
Regarding a meeting between Zelensky and Putin, J.D. Vance considered it more advantageous for it to happen after the Russian President meets with Donald Trump."We are at a point where we are trying to understand agenda issues, about when these three leaders could sit down and discuss the end of the conflict."
On Friday, it was revealed that the US and Russia are working on a truce agreement for the war in Ukraine, but it is expected to involve the ceding of Ukrainian territory conquered by the Russians during the invasion. Specifically, Russia intends to keep the eastern Donbass region, as well as Crimea, which it annexed in 2014.
This news prompted a swift response from some European leaders."The future of Ukraine cannot be decided without the Ukrainians, who have been fighting for their freedom and security for three years. Europeans are also necessarily part of the solution, because their security depends on it," argued French President Emmanuel Macron.
Russia invaded Ukraine on February 24, 2022.
