Pedro Sánchez held a conversation with Volodymyr Zelensky this Saturday in which he reiterated his"total support" in the face of "the latest events on the ground." In a message posted on his X account, the Spanish president made an implicit reference to the upcoming bilateral meeting between the leaders of the United States, Donald Trump, and Russia, Vladimir Putin, on August 15 to discuss the end of the war.
"We must achieve a just and lasting peace that respects the independence and sovereignty of Ukraine," Sánchez warned in a brief statement published on the aforementioned social network."Nothing about Ukraine without Ukraine. We must remain united," he stressed.
This is the same message that Zelensky himself conveyed in a speech to the nation published this Saturday on his Telegram channel, in which the Ukrainian leader said that decisions made without the participation of his nation are"stillborn." He also stated that they will not make border concessions that would favor "the occupiers."
Thus, both kyiv and Madrid are showing a united front of early rejection of Trump's statements at the White House, in which he indicated that any peace agreement would likely involve"some exchange of territories," but without providing further details.
The Ukrainian leader's conversation with Sánchez is part of the round of contacts he has been holding since early Saturday with European leaders, such as the French Emmanuel Macron and the British Keir Starmer, regarding the announcement of the next summit between the US and Russia in the state of Alaska.
Zelensky thanked his Spanish counterpart for his support, informed him of the current diplomatic situation and his vision for what the next steps should be."The most important thing now is to ensure that Russia does not impose its unrealistic conditions on anyone again," he emphasized in X.
Four visits in three years
Sánchez has visited Ukraine four times since the start of the war in 2022, most recently last February, marking two years since the Russian invasion. From kyiv, the Spanish leader announced a new military aid package worth €1 billion.
Zelensky has also traveled to Spain on several occasions and held bilateral meetings with the Prime Minister at international summits where they have both met. Furthermore, La Moncloa occasionally reports on telephone conversations between the two, in which the Prime Minister has always conveyed to his counterpart his support for his country's sovereignty.
