What to do if you suspect a stroke?
According to the Mayo Clinic, a health website, recognizing the symptoms of a stroke and acting quickly can mean the difference between life and death, or between a full recovery and permanent after-effects. Time is critical.
The most common symptoms of a stroke are:
- Sudden weakness in the face, arm, or leg (especially if it is on one side of the body).
- Difficulty speaking or understanding language.
- Loss of balance or coordination.
- Sudden, severe headache with no apparent cause.
- Vision disturbance in one or both eyes.
When these warning signs appear, you shouldn't wait for the symptoms to go away on their own. Furthermore, it's not recommended to give medication without medical supervision or to attempt to move the person suddenly.
The affected person should remain lying on their side with their head slightly elevated until medical personnel arrive. It's also helpful to note the time the symptoms began, as doctors use this information to decide what treatment to apply.
A stroke can be ischemic (due to a blocked artery) or hemorrhagic (due to bleeding in the brain), and each requires different treatments.
