Andriy Parubiy, a sitting member of Ukraine’s parliament and former speaker of the Verkhovna Rada, was shot and killed in Lviv on Aug. 30, authorities said.
Police said the shooting occurred in the Sykhivskyi district of the western city. Parubiy was struck five times and died at the scene. Law enforcement agencies are investigating the circumstances of the attack.
Ukraine launched a murder investigation Saturday after the lawmaker was killed. In a statement, the Office of the Prosecutor General of Ukraine said the shooter is being sought for the “intentional homicide” of the 54-year-old politician.
Parubiy was a well-known public and political figure. He served in the 6th through 9th sessions of parliament and was speaker of the Verkhovna Rada from 2016 to 2019.
During the Euromaidan protests, he acted as commander of the “Maidan Self-Defense,” an improvised security force protecting the protesters from the Ministry of Interior troops – controlled by then-President Viktor Yanukovych – surrounding the tent city in the center of Kyiv.
Later, in 2014, he held the post of secretary of Ukraine’s National Security and Defense Council.
Officials in Lviv confirmed that investigations are ongoing to identify the perpetrators and determine the motive behind the attack.
