Brasilia. Judge Alexandre de Moraes, who is overseeing the trial of former President Jair Bolsonaro (2019-2023), sentenced him to 27 years and three months in prison in Brazil for leading a coup plot to remain in office despite his 2022 electoral defeat.
A majority of a panel of Brazilian Supreme Court judges voted Thursday to convict former President Bolsonaro in a ruling that will deepen political divisions and likely provoke a backlash from the U.S. government.
Judge Carmen Lúcia Antunes cast the third vote in favor of convicting Bolsonaro, thus forming the necessary majority (the green light of three of the five judges who make up the court's first chamber is enough).
The judge stated that"the factual situation is proven, the violence and serious threat" that characterize the crime of belonging to a criminal organization are evident, as well as the division of tasks and the hierarchy used to carry out the attack.
Bolsonaro was convicted of five different crimes: attempted coup d'état, attempted abolition of the democratic rule of law, membership in a criminal organization, damage to public property, and damage to protected property.
