US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin will meet in Budapest to try to end the war that Moscow has unleashed in Ukraine, the AP and Reuters agencies reported, citing the White House chief of staff after a phone call with Putin. It is not yet clear when the meeting will take place. However, high-ranking representatives of Washington and Moscow are scheduled to meet next week.
"I am confident that today's phone conversation led to great progress," Trump wrote in a tweet Thursday evening, describing the conversation as very productive. He expressed confidence that the ceasefire in the Middle East, on which the Kremlin leader congratulated him, would help in the effort to end Russia's war in Ukraine.
At the end of a two-hour conversation, which Trump had already described as long during the call, the presidents agreed that delegations from both sides would meet next week. The US delegation would be led by Secretary of State Marco Rubio. It is not yet clear where the talks would take place.
"President Putin and I will then meet at a mutually agreed-upon location, in Budapest, Hungary, to see if we can end this 'infamous' war between Russia and Ukraine," Trump said, adding that he plans to brief Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, whom he will host at the White House, on Friday about his conversation with Putin.
In his post, Trump also mentioned that much of the conversation with Putin revolved around trade between Russia and the United States after the end of the war, which Moscow began in 2014 with the occupation of Crimea and part of Donbas and escalated in February 2022 with an open invasion.
