Liverpool star Diogo Jota and his brother died in a car crash in Spain on Thursday. Diogo Jota is survived by his wife Rute Cardoso, whom he married just 11 days before the tragic incident, and three young children. His brother Andre, 25, was a footballer for Portuguese second division club Penafiel.

Liverpool manager Arne Slot, captain Virgil Van Dijk and his teammates attended the funeral. Portugal internationals Bruno Fernandes, Ruben Dias and Nelson Semedo also attended. Ruben Neves, who had played for Al Hilal in the United States the day before, was one of the pallbearers.

Neves said goodbye to Jota on Instagram:"We were more than friends - we were family, and we will remain that." Liverpool teammate Alexis Mac Allister also reacted emotionally, writing that he would remember Jota for his intelligence, camaraderie and sincerity:"It hurts so much. We will miss you."
Also present were Portugal national team coach Roberto Martinez and FC Porto president Andre Villas-Boas. Martinez said the brothers left an indelible mark on football and that their spirit would remain with the team forever.
During the ceremony, Bishop Manuel Linda of Porto also addressed Jota's children, who were not present at the funeral. He said that there are no words, but there are feelings, and expressed his condolences to all those close to him.

The tragic accident occurred early Thursday morning in Zamora, northwestern Spain, when the Lamborghini, which Jota and his brother were driving, crashed into the side of the highway and caught fire, allegedly after a tire exploded. No other vehicles were involved in the accident.

Liverpool have postponed the start of their pre-season preparations as a mark of respect. Flowers were laid outside Anfield, flags were flown at half-mast, and all club shops and museums were closed until Monday.
