The victim is 24-year-old Gaia Costa, daughter of a local union leader. The fatal accident occurred in Porto Cervo, in the Costa Smeralda coastal area.
Spohr, a 51-year-old German woman, was driving a car and letting a group of people cross the zebra crossing. Once they reached the other side, Spohr accelerated. But at that moment, Gaia also happened to cross the zebra crossing. Gaia paused briefly when someone in the group shouted her name, possibly to warn her. She was immediately hit head-on.
The Italian woman, as a last reflex, had reached forward in an attempt to stop herself, but it was to no avail. Her head hit the asphalt hard. She initially survived briefly after the accident, but her condition immediately became critical. The ambulance crew that arrived did everything they could to save her, but it was in vain. She succumbed to severe brain damage.
Spohr is accused of causing death by negligence in a traffic accident. She is now in Germany, where she lives. This led to criticism on Italian social media."This looks like an escape. She could have stayed," they said. But she was under no legal obligation to remain in Sardinia. A test showed she had not consumed alcohol or drugs. She stated through her lawyers that she is willing to cooperate with the authorities in the necessary investigation and spoke of a"serious and irreparable loss."
One of her daughters sat next to her
At the time of the fatal accident, one of her two daughters was sitting next to her. She initially drove off, but quickly realized she had caused a disaster. After the accident, she opened the door and took a few steps toward the victim."Then she realized what had happened, put her hands over her face, and collapsed," said one witness.
The family of 58-year-old Lufthansa CEO Carsten Spohr has been vacationing on the Costa Smeralda for ten years. As far as we know, this is the first time Vivian Spohr has been charged with a serious crime by the authorities.
