The International Cycling Union (UCI) on Monday expressed its dismay at the events marking the 2025 edition of the Vuelta a España, and in particular the sudden halt of yesterday's final stage in Madrid - a direct result of a series of incidents related to pro-Palestinian protests. The union also condemned the words of Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez, who encouraged the protests and today called for a ban on Israel from participating in international sporting events.
"Since the race arrived in Spain, the Volta has been disrupted almost daily by militant protest actions: people entering the pit lane, throwing urine, endangering riders and causing physical harm - with some crashing, being injured and having to withdraw from the race," the association's statement read."In the face of these events, the organizers acted quickly and calmly, implementing emergency measures to ensure the continuation of the competition. The repeated actions that affected a significant number of sections constitute a serious violation of the Olympic platform and the fundamental principles of sport.

"We also regret that the Prime Minister of Spain and his government expressed support for actions that occurred within the framework of a sporting competition - actions that could harm its proper conduct - and in some cases even expressed their appreciation for the protesters. This position is completely contrary to the fundamental Olympic values: unity, mutual respect and peace. It also raises questions about Spain's ability to host major international sporting events, while ensuring their existence in safe conditions and in accordance with the principles of the Olympic Platform."
"The UCI strongly condemns the attempt to exploit sport for political purposes in general, and in particular when it comes from governments. Sport must remain independent so that it can fulfill its role as a tool for promoting peace. This is unacceptable and goes against the universal purpose of sport. For this, there are other designated arenas where countries can discuss their disputes."
