US President Donald Trump said he would cut the 50-day deadline he gave Russia in mid-July to end its war in Ukraine to 10 to 12 days from Monday. The White House chief reiterated that he was very disappointed with Russian leader Vladimir Putin before talking to British Prime Minister Keir Starmer in Scotland. Trump then said he was no longer interested in negotiating with Putin.

"I'm setting a new deadline about ten or twelve days from today," Trump said, according to the BBC."There's no reason to wait... we're just not seeing any progress," he added. According to Reuters, he also said he would confirm the new deadline on Monday or Tuesday. Trump mentioned imposing sanctions or secondary tariffs if Moscow does not end its aggression against Ukraine, Czech Television's foreign correspondent Bohumil Vostal reported.

"Secondary tariffs would affect large countries such as India, China, Brazil, which buy raw materials from Russia - oil, gas, which are discounted," the reporter explained.

According to The Independent, the US president is no longer interested in talking to the Kremlin leader about Russia's war in Ukraine. In an interview with Starmer, he described the conflict as a"really bloody war" and said that making a deal was "common sense." "It should happen quickly because so many people are dying," he added.

Trump has spoken to the Russian leader several times by phone since his return to the White House in January, but they have not met in person since. Earlier on Monday, the Kremlin did not rule out a possible meeting between Putin and Trump in China in September, according to AFP.

“We thought we had it figured out many times, and then President Putin starts launching missiles at cities like Kiev and kills a lot of people in a nursing home or wherever,” Trump said. “And I say that’s not how it’s done,” he added, according to Reuters.

Thanks from Kiev

Earlier, without giving details, the US president said he wanted to shorten the previously granted 50-day deadline. After this statement, the head of the Ukrainian presidential office, Andriy Yermak, thanked him for his “firm position and clear message of peace through strength.” “Putin respects only power,” he wrote on the network X.

The US president has been trying unsuccessfully to end Russia's nearly three-and-a-half-year-long invasion of Ukraine. The warring countries have recently held direct talks, but have failed to agree on anything beyond the exchange of prisoners of war and the return of the bodies of dead soldiers. Before taking office, Trump claimed that he would end the conflict in Ukraine within a day.
