Venezuelan Government Response

247 - US President Donald Trump launched another gratuitous attack against the Brazilian government this Friday (5). At a press conference at the White House, the Republican said he was"very angry" with Brazil and did not rule out imposing restrictions on diplomatic visas for officials planning to attend the UN General Assembly in New York. The statements were published by g1.

"We're very angry with Brazil. We've already imposed heavy tariffs because they're doing something very unfortunate," Trump declared when asked about the possibility of barring Brazilian diplomats from the international meeting.

Reviews and rates

Trump's remarks refer to tariffs of up to 50% imposed on Brazilian products in August. At the time, he said former President Jair Bolsonaro was the victim of a"witch hunt" for being charged with a lawsuit in the Supreme Federal Court (STF). The rapporteur for the case is Justice Alexandre de Moraes, who has become a target of criticism from the US administration.

Although he avoided directly naming President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva or Moraes, Trump stated that"the government has changed radically. Radically to the left. This is doing very, very harm. We'll see."

According to analysts, the move to increase tariffs and now consider diplomatic sanctions is part of Trump's pressure strategy against governments considered ideological adversaries.

Repercussion in Brazil

The possibility of restrictions on the UN General Assembly, an event that traditionally brings together heads of state and diplomats from around the world, has raised concerns about the impact on bilateral relations. As the UN host country, the United States has historically guaranteed the passage of foreign officials to the meeting.

On Tuesday (2), Lula had signaled a willingness to negotiate. “If Trump wants to negotiate, 'Lulinha peace and love' is back,” said the president, adding that he hopes for the resumption of dialogue: “I have no interest in fighting with the US, I am interested in this 200-year friendship being able to coexist democratically for another 200 years.”

International actions

Brazil has already responded to the imposed tariffs. The government requested consultations with the World Trade Organization (WTO), claiming that the measures violate rules of the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT) and the Dispute Settlement Understanding (DSU).

"He [Trump] has the right to create tariffs, he has the right, but there are rules. We have the WTO (World Trade Organization). That's why Brazil has already appealed to the WTO, it has already appealed to Section 301. We will use all legal mechanisms," Lula stated.

Meanwhile, in Washington, Trump maintained his willingness to step up pressure. Despite this, he reiterated his"excellent relationship with the people of Brazil," distinguishing his criticism from the current administration's political and ideological stance.
