Activists, leaders, and political organizations linked to Peronism are marching this Wednesday in Plaza de Mayo to express their support for Cristina Fernández de Kirchner, after the Supreme Court upheld her six-year prison sentence in the Vialidad case and granted her house arrest with an electronic anklet.
The rally began at 2:00 PM and a massive turnout is expected in downtown Buenos Aires, although the national government urged caution."Let them demonstrate without violence," was the official message in response to the tension generated by the court ruling and the call for mobilization.
Initially, the protest was planned to take place in front of the Comodoro Py courts, but after learning that the former president would not be transferred and would instead serve her sentence at home, the organizers decided to maintain the event in Plaza de Mayo as the central gathering point.
Within this framework, the Government implemented a strong security operation at the entrances to the Autonomous City of Buenos Aires, while the Buenos Aires Police implemented a third security ring around the historic square to prevent incidents and ensure the peaceful conduct of the day.
The call has the support of numerous sectors of the ruling party, governors, legislators, and representatives of social, union, and student organizations, who expressed their condemnation of the court ruling and denounced political persecution.
The Oral Court's ruling, which allows for the sentence to be served under house arrest, was announced Tuesday, hours after the Supreme Court upheld the conviction for fraudulent administration in the Highways case. Cristina Kirchner must wear an electronic anklet and remain at home while the trial continues.
The situation reignited political tensions and prompted a new chapter of street protests, centered on Plaza de Mayo, one of the historic symbols of protest in Argentina.
