The World's Current Take

The Hungarian national football team had a dream start to their World Cup qualifier against Ireland. The Hungarian team took three corners in quick succession, the last of which resulted in a goal. Szoboszlai took the corner kick in a small area, then Kerkez passed it back to his Liverpool teammate, who aimed for the short side. Dániel Lukács, who replaced Bolla Bendegúz, was not able to get through to the Irish defender, who headed it into the goal, 1–0.

The home advantage did not last long, however, as the Irish were awarded a penalty in the 15th minute. After a long run, Ogbene received the ball, then lost his balance a little next to Kerkez. Finally, Attila Szalai kicked him in the leg, after which the Irishman fell. VAR challenged the referee, and after a short video review, he pointed to the penalty spot. Troy Parrott was behind the ball, and he aimed for the bottom right. Dénes Dibusz felt the direction, but he missed the low shot, 1–1.

In the following minutes, the Hungarian team played with more superiority, our team had the ball, but the match did not look like it would have the lead before the end of the half. In the 38th minute, Kerkez Milos noticed that Barnabas Varga was moving back towards his 16-yard line, so he kicked the ball to his chest, the Fradi striker took it, then after a bounce he scored a bomb goal with his left foot into the top left, 2–1. At the very end of the half, Marco Rossi's team was a bit stuck. We were already in extra time when O'Brian shot Cullen's cross over 4 meters from the goal.

Shocking finale, World Cup dreams were dashed in the last second

It would be an exaggeration to say that the Irish started the second half with great enthusiasm, at the beginning of which Kerkez was crushed by the guests without a heart attack. The Liverpool left-back played with great enthusiasm, but he also clashed with Coleman and Ogbene several times. In the 53rd minute, Ogbene was injured, he collapsed to the ground after a tackle, and after some treatment, the medical staff decided that he could not continue, and Adam Idah came in his place.

Szoboszlai zigzagged inside the penalty area between Parrott and O’Shea on the left side, next to the baseline, in the 55th minute, then passed flatly into the middle, but did not find a partner. A minute later, Dániel Lukács received a great start, but instead of shooting, he guided the ball out of the field. In the 58th minute, the net trembled, Adam Idah scored, Dibuszt lifted it nicely, but he was a few inches ahead of the defenders, so the goal was invalid.

An hour into the game, the Irish captain decided to make more substitutions: he took off Seamus Coleman and Jayson Molumby, bringing on Johnny Kenny and Festy Eboselé. In the 63rd minute, Schäfer was badly kicked in the leg after Azaz stepped on him. Rossi didn't think twice, took off his midfielder and sent on Bence Ötvös, while Lukács was replaced by Callum Styles.

With 20 minutes to go, the Irish national team took out their most dangerous weapon, the passes. However, a Hungarian pass also came. In the 68th minute, the Irish finally got a card, when Liam Scales slipped in from behind Varga, ugly and sneaky. The free kick was curled in by Szoboszlai from 40 meters in front of the goal, and Orbán headed it, but Kelleher easily saved his attempt.

In the 74th minute, Callum Styles was very aggressive and immediately pounced on a poorly received ball, then cleverly prepared the ball for Varga, who broke into the 16-yard box, to shoot, but he found Scales full-time. It was a great situation!

A minute later, Sallai got a great start on the right wing, but none of his teammates came to help him in the middle, so he decided to take the short top from the 16 line, Kelleher saved high. Szoboszlai's corner curled nicely into the middle, but Szalai's header was again saved by the Irish goalkeeper. Before the corner kick, Rossi replaced Alex Tóth, sending in Bolla Bendegúz in his place.

Ireland equalized in the 80th minute, again Parrott was the scorer. That is, he was 30 meters from the goal, but instead of a shot, he offered the Irish striker a soft ball, who poked it over Dibusz's head, 2–2. In the 85th minute, Szoboszlai's corner was deflected by the Irish, but Styles, coming from the momentum, bombarded the goal, his shot was blocked by an Irish defender in the 16th. Two minutes later, Szoboszlai received the ball very clearly, he could have led it to Scales, who was tricked and then shot with his left, from a sharp angle, but Kelleher saved with another great feat.

In the 88th minute, after an unnecessary foul by Bolla, Manning took a free kick from the left wing. After his pass, Kerkez had to save it from the goal line. It was very difficult to clear the ball from there, and then the Irish kicked Sallai. This bought some time. We were already in extra time when Nego made a long run, but Dibusz was there, making a great save on Kenny's shot.

In the 93rd minute, Marco Rossi was introduced as a new player, Damir Redzic got a chance to replace Roland Sallai, and Attila Mocsi replaced Loic Negó. However, they failed to advance, as in the 96th minute, after Scales' forward pass, Troy Parrott scored his third goal, passing under Dibusz's arm into the goal, 2–3. Szoboszlai still managed to cross the ball at the end, but Kelleher pulled it down.

The Hungarian national team suffered a 3–2 defeat at home and thus finished in third place in Group F.
