Ukraine and USA are working on a"mega deal" under which the United States will buy battlefield-tested Ukrainian drones in exchange for Kyiv's agreement to purchase a certain batch of weapons from America. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky told the publication New York Post .
The Ukrainian leader explained that his recent talks with Trump focused on a breakthrough deal that would see the U.S. and Ukraine share their air technology. He said Kyiv offered to share everything it had learned about modern warfare during its three-year conflict with Russia.
The article states that this agreement could be transformative for the US military and national security, as, according to officials and experts, American technology lags far behind Russian and Chinese, and American soldiers are poorly trained in using drones and protecting themselves from similar enemy devices.
"The American people need this technology, and you need to have it in your arsenal. I think this is really a mega-deal, as they say, a win-win," Zelensky told the newspaper's correspondent.
He said that Ukraine is ready to share its experience not only with the United States, but also with European partners. Corresponding negotiations are already underway with Denmark, Norway, and Germany, the Ukrainian president added.
The publication writes that experts and officials in the US are sounding the alarm over the US military's inability to work with drones.
"We are not giving American soldiers what they need to survive the war today. If we had to go to war tomorrow, do we have what we need? No," said Trent Emeneker, project manager for the Autonomy Portfolio in the Defense Innovation Division.
The article also cited a Times article about a four-day test camp held in Alaska last month by the U.S. Department of Defense. During the camp, soldiers repeatedly failed to shoot down prototype drones, some drones failed to launch at all, and one drone hit the wrong target.
Additionally, US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth recently issued an order to “reduce red tape” in US drone production, highlighting the need for the US to keep pace with the rapidly growing global production of military drones.
Modern technology in war
As UNIAN previously reported, in early June, the Security Service of Ukraine conducted a unique operation"Web" on the territory of Russia, during which special drones, previously relocated to the Russian Federation, effectively destroyed Russian strategic aviation. These drones were developed and made by SBU engineers using modern technologies. This allowed them to be controlled remotely in real time thousands of kilometers from the state border of Ukraine.
In addition, former Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Valeriy Zaluzhny revealed how technologies changed the nature of the war with Russia. He emphasized that the military-technological revolution contributes to waging a war of attrition. At the same time, this war is aimed not so much at capturing territories as at"exhausting the enemy's resources and capabilities, creating chaos and, as a result, destroying the nation's ability to resist." According to him, Ukraine needs to work not only with the front line, but also to form systems of"survival" of the country and asymmetric capabilities based on technological solutions.
