Anchorage. Russian President Vladimir Putin said Friday that the"understanding" he said he reached with his U.S. counterpart Donald Trump during a summit in Alaska could bring peace to Ukraine, while the White House chief said talks with the Kremlin leader were"extremely productive" but more needs to be done to end the war in Ukraine.

"We hope that the understanding reached will pave the way for peace in Ukraine," Putin said at a joint press conference with Trump, which ended without taking questions from reporters.

Putin urged Ukraine and Europe not to create"obstacles" to peace.

At the end of the meeting, which lasted about three hours, he stated that he agrees that Ukraine's security must be guaranteed, CNN reported.

"I agree with Trump that Ukraine's security must be guaranteed, and of course, we are willing to work on that," he said.

He added:"I would like to think that the agreement we have reached together will help us move closer to that goal and pave the way for peace in Ukraine."

Trump said that while he has "had a fantastic relationship with President Putin," it was hampered by investigations into Moscow's interference in the 2016 US election during his first term, CNN reported.

“We had many, many difficult meetings, good meetings,” Trump said during the joint press conference.

"We were affected by the deception of Russia, Russia, Russia. I made it a little harder to handle, but he understood," Trump asserted.

The tycoon explained:"I think we had a very productive meeting. There were many, many points on which we agreed, most of them, I would say, and a couple of the important ones that we haven't yet reached an agreement on, but we have made some progress."

“There's no deal until there's a deal. I'll call NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization)... Of course, I'll call President (Ukrainian Volodymir) Zelensky and brief him on today's meeting... We've really made a breakthrough,” Trump said.

The U.S. president concluded his brief remarks at the joint press conference by thanking Putin and saying they would speak again soon.

“Next time in Moscow,” Putin replied in English.

Trump then ended the press conference without answering any questions from the assembled journalists or offering any details about what Putin called the agreement they had reached during their three-hour talks.
