It’s a momentous day for Israel and Palestine.

After a little over two years, the conflict in Gaza has its best shot of coming to an end.

The 20 remaining living hostages in Hamas’ captivity were released on Monday, local time, while more than 1700 Palestinians held in Israeli jails were bussed to Gaza.

US President Donald Trump has shuttled between Israel and Egypt basking in the glow of the peace agreement negotiated by his administration. Only the first few steps of that plan have so far been implemented with plenty of negotiations still need to ensure peace truly holds.

The historic day has also involved drama.

Israel has accused Hamas of potentially breaking the peace plan already by returning the remains of only four hostages on Monday, far fewer than expected.

Several world leaders reportedly refused to attend a peace summit in Egypt that the US President flew to unless Israel’s PM Benjamin Netanyahu stayed away.

While in a speech to Israel’s parliament, Mr Trump chided Mr Netanyahu telling in him could “be a little bit nicer now”. But he did urge Israel’s President to pardon his Prime Minister of corruption charges related to accepting luxury gifts?

“Who cares about cigars and champagne?” Mr Trump said.
