The Ukrainian president said that the US does not want escalation, while expressing confidence in Trump to put pressure on Putin.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said that during his meeting with Donald Trump they discussed long-range weapons, referring to Tomahawk missiles, however, the two sides agreed not to make any further statements on the matter.
The United States does not want any escalation, the Ukrainian leader said, thanking Trump and the United States team for their support.
The territorial issue is a sensitive one.
Asked if he has confidence in the American president's ability to put pressure on Vladimir Putin, Zelensky replied:
The messages that the Russians are sending are not new. But we are counting on President Trump, on the pressure he can put on Putin, to stop this war.
Zelensky added that he believes Trump understands that the most difficult issue in any talks will be that of territory.
The Ukrainian president told reporters that after the meeting he briefed Kiev's strategic allies. Among them were Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, European Council President Antonio Costa, the prime ministers of Britain, Italy, Poland, Finland, and the president of France.
Finally, he clarified that the two leaders did not discuss the Ukrainian attacks on Russian energy facilities.
