International Support for Ukraine

US President Donald Trump said he is “not happy” with his Thursday phone call with Russian leader Vladimir Putin.

The phone call took place amid a recent suspension of US weapon deliveries to Kyiv – a move welcomed by Moscow.

Trump told reporters he was “not happy” with his phone call with Putin, during which the two addressed Iran and Ukraine, adding that he made “no progress” with his Russian counterpart.

“I’m not happy about that,” Trump told reporters after the call, as reported by Kyiv Post’s chief Washington correspondent.

“I didn’t make any progress with him today at all.”

Trump has been pushing for his Russian counterpart to accept a US-brokered unconditional ceasefire, but to no avail.

Earlier, Kremlin aide Yuri Ushakov said the two discussed Trump’s desire for a ceasefire, the situation in Iran, and potential trade between the two countries.

Ushakov also said that Putin told Trump Moscow would not back down from its war goals, but did not say whether the two discussed Washington’s recent freeze on military aid to Kyiv.

Trump also did not publish updates on social media after the call. The lack of such updates marks a stark contrast to the usually upbeat updates after such calls.

After a similar call in May, Trump said the “tone and spirit of the conversation [with Putin] were excellent.”

Trump on arms shipments pause

Addressing the recent weapons halt, Trump told reporters after the call that the US is still “giving weapons” to Ukraine.

“We haven’t [blocked]. We are giving weapons,” Trump said. “[Former US President Joe] Biden emptied out our whole country, giving them weapons. We have to make sure we have enough for ourselves.”

The statement mirrored those made by the Pentagon, which said an internal audit to review US stockpiles was the reason why the aid – including the ones en route to Ukraine in Poland – has been halted.

But Politico, citing unnamed US officials, asserted that the Pentagon acted without coordination with other departments.

The decision also contradicts Trump’s friendly comments with President Volodymyr Zelensky just a week prior, with Trump publicly promising that he would look into procuring more Patriot missiles for Ukraine.

The weapons halt came amid intensified Russian aerial assaults, with drones pounding Kyiv for more than five hours since Thursday evening in the latest attacks – one of the longest in months.

The bombardment was still ongoing at the time of publication. The first wave of drones reached the capital shortly after the Trump-Putin call ended, with Kyiv Post correspondents reporting audible explosions on the ground.
