Mogherini, who was responsible for the Union's foreign policy from 2014 to 2019, currently heads the College of Europe, which was raided. Officials also raided European Union diplomatic offices.

According to the source, Mogherini was detained along with two other individuals.

The European Public Prosecutor's Office stresses that all persons are presumed innocent until proven guilty.

Belgian newspaper Le Soir said that among the three detained was another Italian, former EEAS Secretary-General and former Italian Ambassador to Spain Stefano Sannino, who currently serves as the European Commission's Director-General for the Middle East, North Africa and the Persian Gulf.

The European External Action Service (EEAS) and the College of Europe are at the centre of an investigation into suspected fraud related to EU-funded training courses for diplomats, the European Public Prosecutor's Office (EPO) said in a press release.

The report states that searches were also conducted at the suspects' homes.

The EEAS commissioned the College of Europe to implement a training programme for junior EU diplomats through a competitive procedure.

According to the EP, the current investigation aims to determine whether the university and its representatives knew in advance about the selection criteria or knew before the competition was announced that the project would be intended for them.
