US President Donald Trump raised expectations that a meeting between the two leaders could take place soon when he said after hosting President Volodymyr Zelensky and European allies at the White House that they had both agreed to meet.

Earlier this week, Lavrov denounced the White House meeting as a"failed" attempt by the Europeans to change the US leader's position on Ukraine, which was agreed with Putin during their meeting in Alaska last week.

On Friday, he dashed hopes for a meeting between Putin and Zelensky to end the four-year war by questioning the Ukrainian president's legitimacy and repeating Russia's maximalist claims.

"There are several principles that Washington believes must be agreed to, including giving up NATO membership and discussing territorial issues, and Zelensky has rejected all of these," Lavrov said.
