The national government ―and especially the President of the Republic, Gustavo Petro― is already in constituent mode, despite the wave of criticism that has been known from different political sides to that initiative.

This Friday, October 24, the Colombian president will take his first step to materialize the call for a national constituent assembly, which will be crossed with the elections that Colombia will hold in 2026, where the country will define the course of the nation, in Congress and in the Presidency.

But despite the criticism of Petro, the head of state called—in principle—for a march at 4:00 p.m. in Bogotá's Plaza de Bolívar this Friday, where, according to the president himself, he will begin collecting signatures for the constituent assembly.

Announcement made after the Superior Court of Bogotá, in the second instance, acquitted former President Álvaro Uribe Vélez, by revoking the 12-year prison sentence for the crimes of procedural fraud and bribery in criminal proceedings.

Petro also used the dispute he's waging with his US counterpart, Donald Trump, as an excuse for the call to the Plaza de Bolívar. This has plunged the country into a deep diplomatic crisis.

"Now Trump, allied with these politicians and Uribe, will seek to sanction the president who, throughout his life, denounced the alliances between Colombian political power and paramilitary drug trafficking in Colombia, and he is doing so with the help of those who aided paramilitarism in the country," the Colombian president said at the time.

And he added in the message he published on his X account: “In the Commission of Accusations, those involved in the Fomag embezzlement are already looking for a coup d'état. So the time for definitions has come and it is not Trump who defines, it is the people. I will wait for you in the Plaza de Bolívar in Bogotá, this Friday, to begin the collection of signatures for the constituent power ”.

But several sectors have questioned whether President Gustavo Petro will be able to fill the Plaza de Bolívar, given that he launched the call for participation on Tuesday of this week, and an event of this magnitude requires logistics, setup, and, above all, more time.

However, and given the possibility that the Plaza de Bolívar won't be filled or that the attendance will be low, President Gustavo Petro has an ace up his sleeve, or a kind of little trick.

Just a few hours before the "march," he posted several posts on social media warning that a concert featuring several artists will also be held. This situation could encourage more people to come to Plaza de Bolívar.
