1:09

According to the ceasefire agreement, Israel must release 250 Palestinian prisoners , including some serving life sentences for deadly attacks, and the terrorist group Hamas has until Monday, 13, to release the 48 Israeli hostages still held in Gaza , some alive and others dead in captivity

The agreement came into effect at 12:00 local time  (6:00 Brasília time) this Friday, 10. Israeli Army troops began repositioning themselves within  Gaza  to the lines agreed in the truce agreement after the ceasefire was approved by the office of Prime Minister  Binyamin Netanyahu  during the early hours of the morning.

Thousands of people began walking north after the army's announcement. Earlier, Palestinians reported heavy shelling in parts of Gaza. The Israeli cabinet's approval of US President Donald Trump's plan marks an important step toward ending a devastating two-year war that has destabilized the Middle East.

Israel must take back all hostages still held in the Gaza Strip. According to the military, of the 48 hostages, 20 are believed to be alive. This was the most urgent point of the plan for the Israelis and Americans.

Why is the Gaza Strip so important in the conflict between Israel and Hamas?

This initial agreement between Hamas and Israel addresses only some of the 20 points of a plan proposed by Trump last month, and some of the most difficult issues appear to have been left for a future phase of the negotiations. Among them, who would govern the post-war Gaza Strip and whether, to what extent, and how Hamas would lay down its weapons.

On Saturday, a leader of the terrorist group told AFP that disarmament is off the table and non-negotiable .

Trump reiterated in a meeting on Thursday that disarmament will be part of the second phase of the Gaza deal."I'm not going to talk about that because you kind of know what phase two is. But... there will be disarmament," Trump told reporters. The president added that there will also be withdrawals of Israeli forces.

Even with many details still to be agreed upon, many expressed relief at the progress.

In Tel Aviv's so-called Abductees' Square, Israelis sang, danced, and raised Israeli and American flags. Einav Zangauker, mother of Israeli hostage Matan Zangauker, told reporters that she wants to tell her son she loves him."If I have a dream, it's to see Matan sleep in his own bed," she said./com  AP and AFP
