Welcome to our live coverage of the historic summit in Alaska between US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin.

The two leaders came face-to-face and shook hands on the tarmac at Anchorage’s Elmendorf Air Force Base at 11.15am local time on Friday (5.15am Saturday, AEST) before heading into a meeting with advisers for around three hours.

Mr Trump had said he would “not be happy” if a ceasefire wasn’t announced and he wanted Ukraine’s Volodymyr Zelensky at a subsequent meeting.

But when both men faced the press there seemed to be nothing to announce although Putin mentioned a vague “agreement”.

“There’s no deal until there’s a deal,” Mr Trump said adding he would call Mr Zelensky and European leaders. He didn’t mention the word “ceasefire” at all.

Unlike his usual press encounters, Mr Trump took no questions from reporters. So we’re currently no wiser on what that “agreement” might be.

But Putin did suggest the pair’s next chat should be in Moscow. If that were to happen it would virtually guarantee Mr Zelensky would not be in attendance. Which could well be the point.
