(Washington = Yonhap News) Correspondent Kim Dong-hyun = Rather than expressing disappointment over not winning the Nobel Peace Prize this year, which he had desperately wanted, U.S. President Donald Trump expressed his anticipation for winning it next year.

When asked about his decision not to receive the Nobel Peace Prize at a White House event on the 10th (local time), President Trump responded,"There are those who say they (the Nobel Committee) should have (selected President Trump) because we did so much," adding,"But I'm happy because I saved millions of lives."

He said,"You could say that (this year's Nobel Peace Prize) was given to me in 2024, but I was running for president in 2024."

This year's Nobel Peace Prize selection is an evaluation of activities conducted in 2024, but it is interpreted to mean that he may not receive it this year since he served as president in 2025.

President Trump has repeatedly claimed that he has brokered peace agreements to end eight wars since taking office this year, including the recent ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas in the Gaza Strip.

President Trump said that Venezuelan Nobel Peace Prize laureate Maria Corina Machado called him that day and said,"I'm accepting the award in your honor. You truly deserve it."

He said Machado's remarks were "very kind," adding,"I didn't say, 'Then give me the award.' I think she might have given it to me. She was very kind."

He announced an agreement to lower drug prices with pharmaceutical company AstraZeneca at the White House that day.

He said AstraZeneca would supply all future prescription drugs to Medicaid at most-favored-nation (MFN) prices.

The most-favored-nation price that President Trump is talking about refers to the lowest price that pharmaceutical companies apply to developed countries other than the United States.

AstraZeneca also agreed to sell all future drugs launched in the U.S. market at a discount and to invest $50 billion in the U.S. over the next five years, in return for a three-year exemption from pharmaceutical tariffs.

President Trump had previously announced at a briefing held at the White House on the 30th of last month with Pfizer CEO Albert Bourla that Pfizer would sell all new drugs it releases to the U.S. market in the future at most-favored-nation (MFN) prices.
