247 - The Supreme Federal Court (STF) will judge Jair Bolsonaro (PL) and the so-called “crucial nucleus” of the attempted coup d'état starting this Tuesday (2). The charges against Bolsonaro and seven other defendants will be analyzed by the First Panel of the Court, composed of ministers Cristiano Zanin, Cármen Lúcia, Alexandre de Moraes, Luiz Fux and Flávio Dino.
In addition to Bolsonaro, the “crucial nucleus” includes: Alexandre Ramagem (former director-general of Abin); Almir Garnier Santos (former commander of the Navy); Anderson Torres (former Minister of Justice); Augusto Heleno (former Minister of the Institutional Security Cabinet); Mauro Cid (informer and former aide-de-camp to Bolsonaro); Paulo Sérgio Nogueira (former Minister of Defense) and Walter Braga Netto (former Minister of the Civil House). All are charged as defendants for leading the attempted coup d'état.
If convicted, the defendants could face up to 43 years in prison. They are charged with the following crimes: armed criminal organization; attempted violent abolition of the democratic rule of law; coup d'état; damage caused by violence and serious threat against federal property, causing considerable harm to the victim; and damage to listed property.
The only exception is Alexandre Ramagem. In May, the Chamber of Deputies approved a partial suspension of the criminal proceedings against him, limiting his liability to three of the five original crimes: armed criminal organization, attempted violent abolition of the democratic rule of law, and coup d'état.
The trial of Bolsonaro and the other defendants is expected to continue until September 12.
