Donald Trump meets with Vladimir Putin in Alaska

On Friday, August 15, just before 9 p.m., Vladimir Putin's plane landed in Alaska. The Russian President flew to Anchorage for a meeting with Donald Trump on Ukraine. The US President landed in Anchorage earlier, around 8:20 p.m. Polish time. The two leaders greeted each other around 9:11 p.m. For the first time in several years, a Western leader shook hands with the Russian president, who has been isolated by much of the international community since the invasion of Ukraine, which began on February 24, 2022.

Vladimir Putin and Donald Trumphave already traveled to the location where the talks will be held. The politicians sat in front of a backdrop bearing the words"Pursuing Peace." They made no opening statements before the meeting, nor did they answer journalists' questions.

Change in the format of Trump's meeting with Putin

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said the talks between the Russian and American delegations could last at least 6-7 hours. Initially, it was reported that Trump would speak with Putin one-on-one. It was later announced that both leaders would be accompanied by two advisors. On Thursday, Peskov announced that the Russian delegation would include Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, presidential advisor Yuri Ushakov, Defense Minister Andrei Belousov, Finance Minister Anton Siluanov, and Kirill Dmitriev, head of the Russian Direct Investment Fund. The US delegation included Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Trump's special envoy Steve Witkoff, Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick, Secretary of the Treasury Scott Bessent, CIA Director John Ratcliffe, presidential spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt and White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles.

Post-meeting conference in Alaska

Dmitry Peskov expressed hope that the talks in Alaska would conclude successfully. A press conference is scheduled to be held after the summit. It is not yet known whether only Trump will attend or whether Putin will also attend.
