DNA samples taken from two items found near the scene of the murder of conservative influencer Charlie Kirk match the DNA of the suspect in custody, FBI Director Cass Patel announced today.

Five days after the murder, which shocked America and exposed its political cracks, the investigation focuses on Tyler Robinson, the 22-year-old who was arrested on Thursday night and is not cooperating with authorities.

DNA traces betrayed him

Much evidence was collected by the police, including a screwdriver, which was found on the roof of a building on the University of Utah campus (west), where the gunman was hiding.

A towel in which the rifle was wrapped was also found at the scene, the head of the FBI, the federal police that has taken over the investigation, told Fox News today.

"I can announce today that the DNA traces on the towel that was wrapped around the firearm and the DNA on the screwdriver belong to the suspect currently in custody," said Kas Patel.

The handwritten note

Having received criticism for his actions from the beginning of the case, the FBI chief also referred to a note the suspect had written and then destroyed.

The suspect wrote, in capital letters,"I have the opportunity to eliminate Charlie Kirk and I will seize it," he said, adding that the FBI has evidence of this note.

As reported by the Telegraph, the FBI director claimed that the note was found in Robinson's home, which he shared with his partner, and had been written before the murder.

"Although the note was destroyed, we found forensic evidence proving its existence and confirmed its contents thanks to the FBI's investigative approach," he added.

According to Utah Governor Spencer Cox, the motive for Kirk's murder remains unclear at this time, and the 22-year-old suspect is not cooperating with authorities.

The charges he faces

Robinson, 22, is scheduled to appear in court Tuesday, facing charges including murder, use of a firearm and obstruction of justice, according to officials.

Utah Attorney General Derek Brown did not clarify whether authorities would seek the death penalty, but noted that everything is on the table.

For now, Robinson is in a special prison unit and will remain under enhanced monitoring pending a mental health evaluation, a process that could take several days, authorities also said.
