Emergency Response and Rescue Operations

Following the tragedy that struck the city of Safi due to the heavy rainfall recorded yesterday, Sunday, which claimed the lives of 37 people and caused significant material losses, the city of Tangier is on high alert to confront any emergency regarding the floods that threaten the city, which is among the cities most prone to rainfall in the country.

According to data obtained by the Hespress electronic newspaper, the local authorities in the Bride of the North are prepared to face the risks of floods, as preparations have been activated at the level of the Tangier-Asilah prefecture.

The sources that contacted the newspaper noted that the delegated management teams, along with civil protection elements, local authorities and the municipal council, are ready, as they have put in place all the necessary equipment to intervene in the event of any emergency or new development.

These preparations come in the context of expectations of the arrival of weather disturbances carrying significant amounts of rain in the coming hours in the north of the country, where most regions of the area are expected to witness large amounts of rainfall.

A number of neighborhoods in the city of Tangier, especially the marginal ones, experience flooding and their streets become submerged during significant rainfall in a short period of time. This puts the city's mayor and district heads in the line of fire of criticism, holding them responsible for the weak infrastructure and the inability of drainage channels to accommodate the rainfall in areas that suffer from a clear lack of equipment.

These developments come at a time when the regional directorate of the Ministry of National Education, Early Childhood Education and Sports in Tetouan announced the suspension of studies, today, Monday, in various schools and educational institutions in the region, due to the bad weather conditions in the region, in implementation of the recommendations of the regional vigilance cell.

The Meteorological Directorate had warned, at the end of the week, of weather fluctuations carrying heavy rains in the regions and provinces of M’diq-Fnideq, Fahs-Anjra, Tangier-Asilah, Tetouan and Larache, and its fears were heightened by the raging torrents witnessed by the city of Safi and the number of victims and the great losses it caused.
