The World's Current Take

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán has now become"the Kremlin's most loyal ally." This was stated on Thursday by the chairman of the extra-parliamentary party TISZA and Orbán's strongest critic Péter Magyar in a speech to a crowd in Budapest's crowded Heroes' Square and adjacent Andrássy Avenue. Magyar addressed his supporters on the occasion of the national holiday marking the anniversary of the outbreak of the revolution in 1956, and his speech was broadcast live by several media outlets, reports TASR's correspondent in Budapest.

  • Péter Magyar has called Viktor Orbán the Kremlin's most loyal ally.
  • TISZA party criticizes his policies.
  • TISZA leader plans fundamental changes if he wins.
  • Proposes restoration of independence of public institutions and media.
  • TISZA supports strengthening cooperation with the EU and NATO.

Magyar: The government is afraid of questions just as the"state party" was afraid of them before the regime change

Magyar noted that the "state party," which was dissolved during the regime change in 1989, was revived in the form of the ruling Fidesz party."Just as the government was afraid of questions before the regime change and tried to silence people, it is happening now. The government is buying silence with money," he added.

“Enough, comrades!” said the chairman of the TISZA party, to which the crowd responded by chanting “Russians go home!” According to him, the Hungarian homeland does not belong to politicians, oligarchs and political parties, but to Hungarians who work, teach and heal.

In case of victory, TISZA plans big changes

Magyar announced that if TISZA wins next year's parliamentary elections, the new parliament will restore the independence of investigative bodies, join the European Public Prosecutor's Office (EPPO), open the agents' files, submit a law on national reconciliation, but also establish an office that will search for and return state property that has fallen into private hands.

Among the next steps in the event of a change of government, Magyar highlighted strengthening membership in the EU and NATO, launching a program of tax cuts and pension increases, introducing a tax for billionaires, restoring the independence of public media, and stopping support for state propaganda.
