The “worst possible” scenario of famine is unfolding in Gaza.
That's according to a new report from the UN-backed IPC.
But the organization has not yet formally classified the situation as famine.

Highest level of hunger in Gaza: "I would sell my house for food for my children"

The highest level of hunger is in Gaza, according to a new report by the UN-backed Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC).
"Malnutrition has increased sharply during the first half of July. Over 20,000 children have been admitted for treatment of acute malnutrition between April and mid-July – of which more than 3,000 are severely malnourished," the IPC writes in the report.
The organization continues by writing that measures are needed to bring aid into Gaza:
"Immediate action must be taken to end the suffering and allow unhindered, large-scale and life-saving humanitarian assistance. This is the only way to stop more deaths and a catastrophic human tragedy."
The situation in Gaza is not yet formally classified as famine, according to Reuters.
A formal declaration of famine is unusual, and requires reliable information that is not currently possible to collect for Gaza.
The IPC has so far declared famine a few times, in Somalia in 2011, South Sudan in 2017 and 2020, and parts of the Darfur region in Sudan last year, writes TT.
The IPC will"without delay" conduct an analysis to determine whether the situation can be classified as famine or not, the organization writes.
