Republican Majority Leader in the US Senate John Thune said on Monday that consideration of a bill with new sanctions against Russia and its trading partners has been postponed until Donald Trump's scheduled meeting with Putin.

This was reported on Monday by Politico, Ukrinform reports.

"I think that at least now Senator Graham (author of the bill with sanctions against Russia – ed..) is working with the White House, trying to determine whether this meeting, which will take place in a couple of weeks, will be fruitful," Tun noted.

He also noted that he would wait and see how the planned summit in Hungary would go.

A second person, who expressed his position anonymously, confirmed that consideration of the bill has actually been postponed until Trump's meeting with Putin.

As Ukrinform reported, last week, the Republican majority leader in the US Senate, John Thune, declared his readiness to support the bill, which provides for new trade and financial restrictions on Russia. He noted that consideration of the bill, developed by Republican Lindsey Graham together with Democrat Richard Blumenthal, could take place within the next 30 days.

However, the next day, US President Donald Trump expressed his intention to talk to Republican leaders in Congress about possible sanctions against Russia, saying that such a move may not be timely as he prepares to meet with Putin again in Hungary.
