Algeria's Position and Challenges

Against the backdrop of the recent UN Security Council resolution adopting the Moroccan autonomy plan for the southern provinces, Mohamed El Mahdi Bensaid, a member of the collective leadership of the Authenticity and Modernity Party, called for “thinking about an ambitious Moroccan vision that lives up to the lofty royal vision and enables the mobilization of citizens, especially Moroccan youth who have become more educated, connected and aware than ever before.”

In a speech delivered on behalf of the collective leadership of the PAM party at a national symposium in Rabat on Saturday, Bensaid stressed that “the enthusiasm stirred by the victories and successes of our nation, whether sporting, economic, or diplomatic, is not always reflected in the level of political participation.”

Bensaid considered that “the successes of our diplomacy and the victories achieved on the national cause front are the result of a wise royal vision and the consensus of the entire nation,” adding: “On the domestic front, we must now ask ourselves how the party’s work and our commitment in the current government majority, as well as our future proposals, can keep pace with Morocco’s position on the international stage.”

The same party official pointed out that “what happened on October 31st is a victory that adds to the great victories in the Kingdom’s past; we have achieved, under the supreme royal leadership, a victory that has been written in history.”

According to the same spokesperson, “The victory of October 31, which was achieved on the international legal stage, will fundamentally change the course of our region’s history, raising the need to consider the importance of this event and to envision current and future actions that are worthy of its significance.”

A member of the collective leadership of the General Secretariat of the PAM party said that this victory also coincides “with the fiftieth anniversary of the triumphant Green March, which was a major turning point in our history, and constituted the completion of our independence and the recovery of the lands taken by the imperialist powers; this march constituted, for the Moroccan nation, a historical horizon, a moral duty, and a commitment, as evidenced by its oath.”

He continued, explaining: “Fifty years after the Green March, and with the opening of a new chapter of victory on the international stage, we have a historic opportunity. Our duty is to mobilize our citizens, especially the youth, by formulating a Moroccan dream that lives up to our country’s status, encompasses all energies, and integrates them into political action.”

This will be done “through political participation and voting, as well as commitment, proposals and discussion (...) The ‘Generation 2030’ was one of the tools we put in place to embody and move this workshop, recalling the ‘All Democrats’ movement of 2008,” the speaker notes.

In connection with the title of the symposium, “50 Years of the Green March,” Bensaid believes “it is necessary to recall this march in the making of policies, procedures and the party’s future program, as a glorious historical past and a source of pride and social bond whose memory must be passed on in a vivid, dynamic and inspiring way to future generations.”

It should also be remembered as “a politically present green march, and a lever for development, not only for our precious southern regions, but for the entire Moroccan nation, while also remembering it as a vision and a future commitment, with the aim of making Morocco strong with its precious southern regions, and an economic, geo-political and cultural hub for the Africa of tomorrow,” in the words of the same source.

Regarding the future of the Kingdom, the same official stressed that “the constitutional reform of 2011, advanced regionalization, and the high directives of His Majesty the King regarding human capital and its appreciation, as well as the search for a renewed development model and the consolidation of the social protection state… all constitute guiding compasses for the Authenticity and Modernity Party.”

He also stated that the party participating in the current government “was born following the reflection and progress that followed the major projects, as well as the institutional, cultural and societal progress at the beginning of the third millennium, including women’s rights, the Equity and Reconciliation Commission and the deepening of the democratic option.”
