Conflicting Cause of Death

Amid growing outrage over the murder of retired Veracruz teacher Irma Hernández Cruz - which occurred at the hands of an armed group that had previously exposed her in a narco video - the arrest of two alleged perpetrators has come to light.

They are alleged members of the Sombra criminal group and calling themselves Mafia Veracruzana , who are attributed to the illegal deprivation of liberty of the teacher and taxi driver and the recording of the video where she was seen subdued, tied up and kneeling.

Local media reported the arrest of Víctor “N”, alias “El Cholo” or “Moyo”, and José “N”, “El Gastón” or “Águila”, during an operation in the municipality of Cerro Azul, adjacent to Álamo Temapache, where the teacher was murdered.

So far no authority has confirmed the arrest.

When she was deprived of her liberty on Friday, July 18, by an armed group in northern Veracruz, family and friends mobilized to try to rescue her; however, hours later, organized crime released a video.

The 62-year-old teacher was subdued, kneeling with her hands tied, surrounded by armed men; she was forced to read a message asking taxi drivers in that region to pay their crime rate or suffer the same fate.

Ministerial authorities confirmed yesterday, Thursday, that his body was found in the community of Tepetzintlilla in the municipality of Álamo, which caused great public outrage.

The governor of Veracruz, Rocío Nahle (Morena), explained that the teacher's body was found on a property during a military operation.

"Unfortunately, early yesterday morning, when members of the Defense Ministry entered a property in the northern area, near Álamo, and found vehicles, vests, and weapons, the criminals realized what was happening and left, and unfortunately, the teacher's body was found there," he said in an interview with local news outlets.

And he revealed that after being assaulted, the teacher died of a heart attack, according to the results of the forensic studies.

"The investigation is ongoing; the teacher was assaulted. The forensic experts are telling us that the violence caused her to have a heart attack," he added.

The teacher's murder shook Veracruz society, which for two decades has been suffering the ups and downs of violence related to the operation of drug cartels.
