The US Senate, controlled by a slim Republican majority, on Tuesday approved the Big Beautiful Act of President Donald Trump's administration, which sets out future US tax policy and balances the budget.
The participation of US Vice President J.D. Vance was required for the document to be approved in the upper house, an Ukrinform correspondent reports.
Under the US Constitution, the vice president can vote in the Senate when the number of seats is divided equally – 50:50, which was the case this time. With a slim Republican majority in the upper chamber, several of them refused to support Trump's controversial initiative.
The legislation, among other things, provides trillions of dollars in tax breaks for businesses and implements new Trump campaign promises, such as eliminating the income tax on tips and overtime pay. At the same time, the document contains hundreds of billions of dollars for law enforcement and immigration protections.
To offset these costs, the legislation cuts about $1 trillion to the federal Medicaid health insurance program for low-income and disabled people, as well as other health care programs. The bill also cuts the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), formerly known as food stamps.
Previously, the US Congressional Budget Office estimated that nearly 12 million people would lose health insurance if Trump's initiative takes effect.
The bill must now be sent to the House of Representatives, which has already approved the bill, but must now also approve the Senate amendments. However, many Republicans in the lower house have opposed the changes made during the Senate hearing, which casts doubt on the document's swift passage by July 4, the US Independence Day, as President Trump wants.
As reported, the potential passage of the tax policy bill would be considered a victory for the Trump team on the path to fundamental changes in the domestic politics of the United States.
